Ensuring OT Security and Resilience with Cloud Connectivity
In this session, we will explore the potential of cloud connectivity for Operational Technology (OT) within the Department of Defense (DoD). Cloud connectivity integrates rented servers directly connected to the DoDIN, enabling secure communication between OT systems and cloud infrastructure. The DoD is moving towards authorizing cloud-connected OT due to its strategic advantages. Zero Trust for OT involves strict verification for every person and device accessing resources, ensuring robust protection against cyber threats. Cloud connectivity enhances OT security and resilience by enabling automation, reducing Operations & Maintenance (O&M) costs, leveraging standardized Machine Images (AMIs), facilitating remote access, and supporting weekly patching and POAM mitigation. The session will cover Zero Trust architecture, emphasizing micro segmentation, encryption, and continuous monitoring. We will discuss managing known and unknown risks, rapid Authority to Operate (ATO) iteration through control inheritance, and the benefits to the warfighter, including faster troubleshooting, rapid adaptation, and improved reporting mechanisms. Finally, we will cover how centralized patch management reduces the burden on the base, ensuring timely updates. Join us to understand how cloud connectivity can revolutionize OT security and resilience, benefiting the DoD and its warfighters.

Future-Proofing OT Cybersecurity: Where Can We Go Next
Traditional IT approaches to cybersecurity, where visibility and monitoring are the primary objectives, are now being deployed on OT networks. This approach provides some level of protection, but with cyberattacks growing in sophistication and volume, it is not enough. OT systems will need to begin to adapt cryptographic tools to meet the Protect Function outlined in NIST’s CSF Framework 2.0. It will be critical that OT cybersecurity solutions proactively secure systems, assets, and data. This session will look at existing cryptographic tools suitable for delivering robust cybersecurity, how they work, and what will be required to adopt them now, protect new and existing systems, and support them in the future.
