Walk - Run - Roll - Scoot to Support the SAME Foundation

Complete a 5K on your schedule, in your modality, and help power the SAME Foundation’s impact. Entry fee: $35.

Submit your time and modality to be considered for an award presented at the Society Gala.

How It Works

1. Register: Sign up for the 5K (DURING JETC registration).
2. Move your 5K, your way: Complete the route anytime during JETC.
3. Record your result on the sheet you received during check in: Track your time and modality (walk/run/wheelchair/e-scooter).
4. Submit at the same table you picked up the route sheet. Awards will be announced during the Society Gala.

• Fastest times (by age category and by modality)
• Largest Group/Team
• Slowest Time (celebrating participation and spirit)

Route: Portland’s Eastbank Esplanade 

During JETC, consider this scenic riverfront route that starts near the Oregon Convention Center (NE MLK Jr Blvd) and uses the Eastbank Esplanade. Suggested loop: Head west to the Willamette River, go south along the Esplanade toward the Hawthorne Bridge, cross to the west side, and return via the Steel Bridge. This loop is approximately 3.4 miles; shorten slightly along the riverbank to hit 3.1 miles. The path is paved, wide, and shared by pedestrians and cyclists. Access: The Esplanade can be reached via footpaths from the Rose Quarter or directly west of the Convention Center.

Safety & Accessibility

• Follow local laws; use lights/visibility in low light; wear a helmet on e-scooters; yield on shared paths.
• Check weather and hydrate appropriately.
• Choose terrain and segments that match your mobility needs; the Esplanade is paved but conditions vary.
• By signing up, you acknowledge that you participate at your own risk and know that participating in a 5k is a potentially hazardous activity. You assume all risks associated with participating. If you have medical concerns, consult a professional before participating.

Submitting Your Results

• Submit: Name, email, modality, total time (HH:MM:SS), Optional photo: #SAME20265K for consideration for largest group/team
• Method: Use the Submit Results Paper Picked Up at Registration
• Deadline: Submissions MUST be received by May 21, 2026, at 12:00 p.m.to be considered for an award.
• Privacy: Results (name, modality, time) may be shared in gala or social highlights; photos used with permission.

Your $35 entry directly supports the SAME Foundation: fueling leadership development, STEM outreach, and programs that build the nation’s engineering readiness.

Can I participate outside Portland? Yes. This is a ‘5K On Your Own’, but to be considered for an award you must be present in Portland.
Do treadmill runs count? Sure, but to be considered for an award you must be present in Portland.
Do I need GPS proof? Not required, but a GPS link/screenshot or photo helps with any potential ties and award verification.
Can relay teams participate? By all means and to be considered for an award you must be present in Portland.
Are there shirts or swag? If shirts become available through a sponsor, pick-up details will be posted in registration and on-site at JETC.
